Twins spread message of abstinence to Vero high schoolers in hip-hop style INDIAN RIVER COU... Twins spread message of abstinen
INDIAN RIVER COUNTY - Twins Jason and Joshua Rogers of Jacksonville didn't just tell Vero Beach High School students to abstain from sex until marriage.
The Rogers brothers, originally from New York, are self-described virgins and single, something that gave them some razzing on the basketball court when they were in high school, Joshua said.
Being a virgin was a choice the twins made as teens. Their mother told them if they got a girl pregnant, she would kick them out of her house, they said.
Joshua asked the students if they knew about HPV or the human papilloma virus, which can cause genital warts. Few raised their hands. Most of the students, however, raised their hands when asked if they knew about AIDS.
HPV is the No. 1 sexually transmitted disease in America, Joshua said. More than 80 percent of those infected by it don't know they have it, he said.
Jason said he and his brother also promote "secondary virginity," in which a person who previously has had sex makes a commitment to abstain further until marriage.
"You all are taking a risk every single day," Jason said about students having sex. "Somebody could give you a (sexually transmitted disease) and not even know (it)."
The twins encouraged the students to attend a special program tonight at the Vero Beach Community Center. Joshua said they will be working with teens on the same issues, but on a more interactive level. The event begins at 6:30 p.m.
Sponsored by Care Net Pregnancy Centers of Indian River County, which provides education and peer counseling to pregnant women, the twins are visiting all Indian River County public high schools this week. They spoke at the Indian River Charter High School on Wednesday and are scheduled to be at Sebastian River High School today.
