My husband has worked for the highway construction company for over 2 yrs. Though he wears a white hard hat, and a bright yellow safety vest he has almost gotten run over numerous times. This due to terrible drivers who are determined to go around the safety cones and barrels to cut thru traffic congestion. He has even had bottles and other objects thrown at him by passing cars. Do our residents not realize how these men take thier lives into such danger, so that soon we will have better highways and a safer, wider hurricane evacuation route. I pray every night that my husband will come home safely. I thank Brownsville Police Dept. for keeping these drivers in lines and upholding the traffic laws.- L.
I fully support and welcome the Minutemen to the valley. Under the United States Constitution they have every legal right to protect and defend their country from invaders from foreign countries. If anyone disagrees with what the Minutemen are doing then they need to go back to Mexico!
I believe that at one time Guerra was what was right for Willacy County and the Hispanic population in particular the education system. However like many who rise to power he began to take advantage of that power and it got out of control. He has so many followers who remember the old days and still can not let the onion wars go and realize that none of us want that. There are some really good people here that do not judge you by race but only by what kind of person you are. Most of the Angelo and Hispanic want to live side by side and see Willacy County grow and prosper. The that is the only way it will happen is if we let go of the past. We can not change the yesterday the only thing we can change is now and the future. None of us want or need power brokers no matter what their race. It is far past time we join hands and make this the place it can be with honest people in power and law enforcement and justice that is the same for everyone.
I would like to comment on your story of Mr. Vela "Who would like to wager that this man, this self proclaimed sex offender will be walking the streets within a couple of years at the most? thanks to our pathetic and perverted excuse for a justice system, what a joke my county is! it's judges, lawyers and most of all it's D.A. I used your link to find registered offenders near my home, near my CHILDREN and to my complete lack of amazement I found well over 100 in my Zip Code alone! Try typing in yours and see what comes up, it's no less than frightening! Very bad people that have done horrible things to innocent children all walking among us...why? This is Intentional Violence released on the children of our communities and I want to know why! That might even make a newsworthy story Team4News, why do Judges release? why do D.A's bargain? why do our children suffer? - E.
I saw your story tonight and I just had to write in. I am one of those teens that did get pregnant when I was in high school. I was also in the top of my class and did have a bright future ahead of me. But that changed when I was only a freshman in high school. Going into high school with all the pressures of getting good grades, being popular, doing drugs/drinking alcohol and having sex, there's not much support teens have to actually go to someone with these kinds of questions and ask for help or guidance. I think if I would have known more about sex, and at least had access to protection, I wouldn't have gotten pregnant. Now, I don't look back and regret anything that happened. I am very happy in my life; I'm 19 yrs old, have a 3 yr old son, a husband of 3 yrs, and our family is getting our own house! My husband even has a very good paying job. So I wouldn't change anything, but I do very strongly believe that the teens here in the valley need to be taught about the consequences of having sex (for example, getting pregnant, std's, etc). And also they at least need to have the protection available to them if they do decide to have sex because unlike what most parents think, almost every teen does think about sex and might try it, so they might as well be educated about it and have the protection they need to prevent either getting pregnant or catching std's or other diseases. Don't you think so?? Rather be safe than sorry!!
As a current foster parent, we have seen numerous children sent home to their undeserving parents without the CPS Judge even hearing all of the important information in the case. There are overworked CPS workers who try to complete a month's worth of work on three days notice right before the kid's court date. All the judge hears is that everything is OK and that the parents are all complying with their orders....the fact is that few of these parents comply with the court orders, and alot of times, information is just made to look good in order to expedite things and caseloads.....guess who suffers? THE SYSTEM DOES NOT WORK! - J.
Willacy County DA's threat to dismiss all his cases will affect many victims. But then again he has dismissed a lot of cases in the past, nothing new here. But, Guerra has not been a Victim's Advocate. His job is to put guilty people in jail. He is so desperate to get publicity that he could have easily said that he would have to request a change of venue on cases. But, that is too complicated. In his movie, who will play, Sheriff Spence, maybe Tommy Lee Jones, how about Chief Zamora, maybe Jimmy Smits, and Judge Lopez, why no one else but J Lo, herself. Gus Garza will be played by anybody that looks like Hitler. Residents of Willacy County stand in line to see who plays you in the movie. The title of the movie, "Nightmare in Raymondville."
What the Willacy County DA, Juan Angel Guerra, is looking for is more footage for his "movie". His arrest would be grounds for a better conclusion to his movie than just winning the election. He probably saw the movie "My Cousin, Vinny" and is doing what Joe Pesci did, go to jail to get sleep. But, Guerra is no Pesci. I hope that the police chief and the county sheriff don't fall for the ploy. As far as I know, no one has ordered him not to work out of his office. Ya, ya, ya, ya put me in jail if you dare. (with kingsies in his back). Childish maybe, but with a sinister plan.
i am a lifelong resident of willacy county. i am very dissapointed with the allegations about mr. guerra. since the beginning that he ran for office people have tried to get him out. they say its not political but it is in my opinion.it is not surprsing though cause of all the rest of the officials here in town who have done wrong things. i say what someone with high authority needs to do is come and investigate and see who is clean and who is dirty. maybe that will stop all this that is going on here in raymondville, texas. only god knows the real truth and may it all come to light. thanks, anonymous.
I am ashame to be indirectly connected to DA Guerra, he put "Shame" to the Willacy County name. It's bad enough that the Willacy Law Enforcement personnel do not get paid enough to perform their job only to have DA Guerra put these criminal on PROBATION. I would personally like to know how many criminals are in PROBATION for committing crimes against the public. DA Guerra is sending out a message "IT'S OKAY TO COMMIT A CRIME-YOU WOULD ONLY GET PROBATION", especially to the criminals. If DA Guerra publicly make a joke of disobeying a Judge order, what do we even need a Judge for? "CRIMINALS ARE IN CHARGE!!!!!!!!!!!"
I also live in a neighborhood off Alton Gloor with the same problem. The Valle Grande Subdivision has not only become a used car lot but a junk yard. People store their cars on the lawn do do mechanic work and they sit there for days, weeks even months with no tires popped up on bricks. Semi's are being parked on the street. I bought my home four years ago and it has just gotten worse. Cars parked on the side streets making it hard to see oncoming traffic alomost causing accidents. The value or the homes are going down and residents just don't seem to care until their homes or the neighborhood. Maybe the city officials wil, l help those of us who do care.
I don't understand what Michelle Romero is complaining about? First she goes on about traffic, then focuses on there not being enough parking. It seems to me she is just mad that she cannot walk her child to the door or park just anywhere she pleases. If her child is missing twenty minutes of instruction, she might try to go to the actual drop off point instead of wandering around for parking. I am a parent of a child at Castaneda and know for a fact that anyone parking on the target side of the school is going the wrong way, since the drop of is on the other side. Those people that always try to get their way are causing the traffic problems, not the lack of parking.
The weekend before Christmas. I passed a group of people on 10th and Nolana in McAllen, holding signs to bring our troops home. I want them home also, but it is because of men and women who want to defend the right of freedom of speech, that those who protest can protest. So the next time, you protest about our fighting men and women, it is because of them that you can.
Thanks to the tipster and to Channel 4 for rescuing those poor dogs. Maybe the city health inspector would like to be held for a day under those conditions. Great job! - J.
I am writing about the issue between the city of McAllen and the McAllen Police Officers Union. I have been a police officer for seventeen years and I feel that the citizens of McAllen need to start asking questions about how their taxes are being spent. Mayor Cortez claims that agreeing to the one additional percent on retirement that many smaller cities offer and afford would raise taxes. This is a lie. The truth is that not all the police officers are going to retire at the same time. Mayor Cortez also needs to tell the citizens how much the city is paying on three city managers (per year).
As a police officer you have to take a psychological examination to show that you are of sound mind and can make rational decisions. The recent comments the mayor had made about the comparison between the McAllen PD Union President Michael Zellers with Hitler and Saddam Hussein have made me question his vision of reality. Anyone with any knowledge of history can say that neither Hitler or Saddam bargained with anyone. If they didnTMt get what they wanted they would slaughter whom ever got in their way. Someone needs to tell this to the top employee of the city of McAllen (Mayor Cortez).
Mayor Cortez needs to stop lying about who placed the adds in the Monitor. First he says that he had no idea who paid (placed) the all to famous newspaper propaganda and in the same breath he says that if what was printed was incorrect it was an oversight. Mayor, which is it do you know or donTMt you know? The mayor claims that the police department wants to dictate salaries and benefits because this will place other city departments in the shadow (per, say). Mayor where have you been living? There has been union negotiations between employees and employers for decades and decades and this had included Police and Fire Departments.
I don't understand why there is not a back up plan for something like this. I understand that it takes time to fix these types of things but what the company doesnt understand is that a lot of us had to sleep last night without heat and the weather conditions are not very pleasant. Some of us have children and elderly parents who's immune system is not as strong as others to withstand sleeping in this type of cold weather. They should have worked harder to fix this problem since last night and even today we did not have light or were able to heat our homes. - anonymous.

Taking pesos should be the choice of the business owner. He should have the right to except anything in exchange for his merchandise. That used to be a common practice in this country.
I recently saw the news and a certain story caught my attention, the one concerning the pit bulls. I am an avid dog lover and I agree with Mr. Sheppard. The pit bull is not a naturally 'vicious' dog. They were bred to herd bulls, hence the name pit bull. Thus they needed a strong, hardy dog that wouldn't let go as it would most likely mean their death. These dogs have strong jaws and immense power, giving them their bad reputation and one of the most popular choices for dog fighting. Naturally, they were bred to be very good with humans, as they had to trust them with direction on how to herd the bull and I hate to admit it, but when dog fighting, they are usually really nice to their owners. Yes, they do have a higher prey drive than most dogs, but so do other dogs such as Huskies and Hounds.
A pit bull isn't born vicious and I think that in this case, no matter how 'nice' they are, their prey drive took over and their natural instincts came forth. It is terribly sad for the owner of the Chihuahua, but don't blame the pittie or their owner. As Mr. Sheppard said, they are...'molded' into their current disposition by their owner, for better or for worse.
